Unveil the History of Kamnik

Discover the Treasures of the Old Town

Kamnik’s ancient past is shrouded in mystery, with its true story hidden behind a veil of legends and myths from the twilight of the Roman Empire. Emerging from centuries of anonymity, medieval Kamnik flourished under the protection of the Old and Mali Grad castles. This was a time when the town thrived as a center of craftsmanship and home to many noble families. The first recorded mention of Kamnik dates back to the mid-12th century when it became an important center owned by the noble Counts of Andechs. These counts established a mint at Mali Grad, where coins bearing the inscription “Civitas Stein” were minted after 1220.

According to local legend, the tale of Kamnik’s Veronica tells of three brothers who built a church on the hill above the town. In need of funds, they sought help from the wealthy Countess Veronica. However, the proud and miserly countess refused their pleas, and as punishment, she was transformed into a half-snake creature that vanished into the earth. The legend says that Veronica still waits beneath Mali Grad for someone to break her curse. Join us to unravel these stories and more, as we delve into Kamnik’s fascinating history!
